This is put together from talking to some students and having some as friends 

This section is about encouraging them to enjoy social media, but to understand more ….

At the age of 17-22, you cannot have 4,000+ friends

You may have 5 close friends, another 20/30 good friends – perhaps a 100 more friends you chat with. So who are the other 4,000?

How many social media platforms do you know?

How do we categorise them   (networking, messaging, media sharing (video/pictures), blogging, gaming) – I do not see the last two as relevant in Cambodia

Why are social media products free to use? What motivates these companies to do all this work and not charge us?

Because they are selling advertising.

To sell advertising they collect data about us – the more they collect, the more they can sell.

What do they collect?   Is it good?  How do we stop it?  What information should we disclose (see stay-safe-online)

Looking at different types of advertising – which ones are targetted us specifically

Clickbait, what is it. Why you should be wary of it.

Can we use advertising to our benefit?  yes – it can be powerful in Cambodia for local business – may not be relevant to this audience

Explain FB likes – and how it helps you see more, and how you can be tracked. Use likes with care.

If you post on any social media, think that it will be there on the internet forever.  Just because you delete it does not make it go away

Things not to post (particularly private information which can be used against you) – 

If you are posting to Public it is not just your 5000 friends you are telling, it is probably all the friends of those 5,000 friends

How to limit these posts

Will your future employers look at your Facebook? What judgement might they make of you? Will it affect your job prospects?

Show them how to create pages of their own (for their hobby), or which could help their parents run a business (mom’s cooking, dad’s tuk-tuk, uncle’s motorcycle repair)

People tend to use a simple profile of their own which mingles personal data with their business – this separates the business/hobby from their personal profile.

Youtube is not just for looking for music videos, there are many “how to … ” videos, there are many educational videos. More and more of these are in Khmer.
